The Portable Dorothy Parker

Take care of luxuries and the necessities will take care of themselves.

Why, hello again.

Today’s Flik is the amazing Dorothy Parker, The Portable, so to speak, a fabulous collection of just about everything she wrote – poems, short stories and reviews. And Dorothy Parker is just about the coolest woman who ever walked this planet.

Dorothy Parker illustrated the real effects of poverty, economic and spiritual ideas upon women who lacked education as a result of social class and sex. It was a bold new style which spread dramatically, especially in the 1950s among the “Beat Generation,” where previous Flik “Howl” belongs. There are many women who have tried to bring realist ideas to America through poetry, stories and other literature, but none have been as witty, deliciously sarcastic and blunt as Dorothy Parker. Parker writes the poem to show her disappointments towards an American society and her bad luck with men, as seen in a majority of her poetry, and she does so hilariously. I shall leave you with a little poem of hers.

A single flow’r he sent me, since we met.
All tenderly his messenger he chose;
Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet –
One perfect rose.

I knew the language of the floweret;
‘My fragile leaves,’ it said, ‘his heart enclose.’
Love long has taken for his amulet
One perfect rose.

Why is it no one ever sent me yet
One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
Ah no, it’s always just my luck to get
One perfect rose.

You definetly need to check this broad out – she is some kind of fantastic! Enjoy your reading and have a glorious Saturday.

Love, Hanna

    She’s the coolest!
    I loved The Portable Dorothy Parker! It’s a great collection, I’m usually not a big fan of poetry but Parker’s poems are fantastic. And this book has even an amazing cover.
