In honor of Halloween this Monday Madness is all about Tim Burton’s masterpiece The Nightmare Before Christmas. What some of you may not know is that this wonderful animated film began as poem (yes, the Tim writes poetry). You can read it here.
Out of this fabulousness came the wonder we all know as The Nightmare before Christmas, directed by Henry Selick, who is also behind the glorious Coraline film (based on the book by Neil Gaiman), and with music by Danny Elfman.
The story goes like this:
Jack Skellington, the king of Halloween Land (and one of my early cartoon-crushes) is tired of Halloween. One night he comes across the door to Christmas Town and falls in love with the colors and jolly joy of Christmas. Logically, he decides that this year Christmas will be arranged by the creatures of Halloween Land. And chaos commences.
The film’s cast include such loveable lumplings as:
(remember the post about Eddie Borgo?)
The Nightmare Before Christmas was nominated for an Oscar for Best Visual Effects and has won a variety of other prices, including a Golden Globe for Best Visual Score.
If you haven’t seen it already, I highly recommend that you do! This is one of my all time favorite films!
